English I/READ 180 Grade Overview
ENGLISH I/READ 180 is a 94-minute, 10-credit course and counts toward students' ENGLISH and ELECTIVE credits to fulfill graduation requirements.
Class assignments fall into four weighted categories: READ 180 rBook, Independent Reading, READ 180 Computer Software, and Participation.

40% - READ 180 rBookInstruction in reading and writing skills is given in a whole and small group setting. Here is a sample list of rBook assignments:

20% - Independent ReadingStudents read books from the class or school library. Students must
2) Talking, texting, or are unfocused when assigned to the IR Rotation, 3) Absent a lot and don't make up their reading at home, or 4) Not reading at school AND at home (homework), then "fudge" on their actual pages read making it appear as he/she has finished reading. Book Units include:

Use the BOOK EXPERT ONLINE to search for books to read. Limit searches to only a few parameters for the best results.
Although most books listed have SRC! Book Tests, some are still in development. Please check with ms. Lee or Ms. O'Brien before selecting to see if the test is available. |
20% - READ 180 SoftwareStudents practice reading comprehension, learn new vocabulary, develop word and spelling skills, and practice text-supported argumentative writing in the READ 180 software. This highly intuitive and specialized software is only accessible from school.

Class Participation - 20%In order to participate in the class, students must be present. Students who are absent, late, in ISS, cutting, etc, are not getting the most from their educational experience and are missing key components of the curriculum.

If a student's final grade is less than 60%, he or she
- will need to retake the class
- will not be eligible for SPORTS or ACTIVITIES the next school year.
